25 Folk Songs for Young Pianists Op 3 (2016) By Matthew Koumis
This beautifully illustrated book contains 25 Folk Songs from America, China, England, France, Germany, Greece, Jamaica, Japan, Russia, Scotland and Spain. Each song has been carefully arranged to boost the confidence of the young pianist, allowing them to sing along while they play. The first few songs are suitable for beginners, and have no left hand or the most simple left hand accompaniments. The better-known songs, such as ‘Lavenders Green’ (popularised in the Disney movie Cinderella, 2015) make ideal choices for first recitals.
The great music pedagogue Zoltan Kodaly believed that a child should first learn folk songs in their mother tongue, then songs from neighbouring countries, then songs from more distant and exotic countries. Folk songs offer rich cultural material and act as a direct bridge to an appreciation of classical music. Perfect for young and rising talents.
